Exceptional Care for Children announces monumental decision: the ability to provide care for residents beyond their 21st birthday.
August 25, 2025 – After years of dedicated effort, we are thrilled to announce a landmark achievement that will change lives. With final approval from the State of Delaware, a federal waiver, and the passage of House Bill 118, Exceptional Care for Children (ECC) can now officially continue caring for our residents beyond their 21st birthday.
This is a monumental step forward for the medically fragile young adults in our community and their families. For too long, families have faced the daunting challenge of finding appropriate care for their children once they “age out” of pediatric facilities. This decision removes that barrier, providing a seamless transition from pediatric to adult services for residents with severe medical complexities, all within the home they know and trust.
This incredible milestone paves the way for our new Bridge Unit, which is set to open this winter. As the first of its kind in Delaware, this unit will provide essential transitional care, ensuring our young adults continue to receive the specialized support they need in a place they already call home.
